About Coquitlam

Coquitlam is the sixth largest city in the province. It is about 10 to 15 km to the east of Vancouver. Coquitlam incorporated as a city in 1992. The city of Coquitlam is located on the north bank of the Fraser River. Coquitlam borders Burnaby and Port Moody to the west, New Westminster to the southwest, and Port Coquitlam to the southeast. Burke Mountain, East Ridge, Coquitlam Mountain form the north boundary of the city. Together with Port Moody and Port Coquitlam it forms the Tri-Cities.

The Kwikwetlem of the Central Coast Salish were the earliest residents of the region. The name Coquitlam is derived from their name “small red salmon”, which refers to the salmon that travelled from Coquitlam river to spawn in Coquitlam Lake. Coquitlam was incorporated as district municipality in 1891. The early 1900s a big group of French Canadians migrated from Quebec for the lumber industry. They came to the historic community of Maillardville.

When Lougheed Highway was opened in 1953 it led to increased development of the city. In 2016 the 10.9 km Evergreen Extension was completed, a Skytrain connecting Coquitlam to Vancouver.
